Social media influencer and model Emily Ratajkowski shared snaps of two diamond rings on her Instagram, captioning them”divorce rings.” Well, “divorce rings” have been around, but Emily just managed to make them officially a thing.
In the summer of 2022, Emily called off her four-year-old marriage to Bear-McClard after rumors of cheating cropped up. So, Emily decided to repurpose her engagement ring into two entirely new ring styles. The materials used in making the “divorce rings”—including the stones and 18-karat yellow gold settings—were from her engagement ring. The whole purpose and emotions behind the ring changed as well.
For the unversed, a “divorce ring” is one that you buy for yourself after the marriage has ended. They can be switched with your wedding ring or even worn on any other finger. These rings mark the beginning of a new chapter in life. In an exclusive interview with Vogue, Emily said, “The rings represent my own personal evolution. I don’t think a woman should be stripped of her diamonds just because she is losing a man.”
For Emily, this was the ultimate power move. In a video that she shared on TikTok, she said, “I don’t think there is anything better than being in your 30s, still being hot, having a little bit of your own money, figuring out what you want to do with your life, and after [trying] that married fantasy and realizing that it’s maybe not all it’s cracked up to be… you’ve still got your whole life ahead of you… To all those people who are feeling stressed about being divorced, it’s good—congratulations.”
A quick search online will show you that “divorce rings” are still not that popular, but it’s a trend that will eventually pick up.
It’s recommended to wear “divorce rings” on the fourth finger of the left hand. Since that’s where the wedding ring is worn, a divorce ring on that finger shows commitment to yourself. But, wearing the ring on the fourth finger of the right hand is also good because that way you won’t confuse others that you are still in a relationships. However, wearing the ring on the index finger is what shows courage and confidence. It symbolizes freedom.
